Our Travel Topic
Intent: In our Travel Topic, we will take part in Termly Travel Week and make a conscious effort to travel more sustainably when we can, where ever we go. We will also look into how this mission links to our school topics.
Implementation: We will all try our best to walk, scoot, cycle and car share to reduce the air pollution around our school. As one of the Eco leads, I have bought a bike to cycle to work, this has encouraged other children to cycle and scoot to school too. We managed to take a photo of all 16 of us together! What a super effort!
We’ve also made an effort to combine our school trips. By two classes sharing transport to the same destination in one coach and filling every seat, we are reducing our carbon footprint by an enormous amount.
Later this year, Year 4’s Geography topic asks the question, ‘Is traffic a problem in our local area?’ which links well with our Travel mission.

Impact: By focusing on the ways we travel as a school, it has encouraged us all to be more active. The whole school took part in The Big Lent Walk in March, for Cafod. This increased everyone’s fitness as well as raising money and awareness.

It also got a lot of children talking about how much walking they do. For some of our children, the KS2 Daily Mile, walking the perimeter of the playground, is the only exercise they actively take part in.

Year 4’s field work was a success. They investigated whether traffic is a problem in our local area by taking a walk around our local community. They concluded that although there is a lot of traffic, we have a very safe crossing close to our school and parents are encouraged to park further away from school and walk in. The Eco committee have shared this idea of parking further away from school with their classes, especially for pick up, at the end of the day, when they aren’t in as much of a rush.

On the 13th of June, the Eco committee led a whole school liturgy to remind the whole school of our ‘Why’ – ‘Aspire not to have more but to be more’ and our Travel mission. We also launched our final Termly Travel Week, 17th-21st June 2024, with the whole school. A lot of children brought their scooters and bikes to our liturgy to mark the occasion.
Our final Eco liturgy of the year linked closely with the week’s theme of Missionary Discipleship through the scripture, I am the vine.

Termly Travel Week was another successful event that the whole school took part in. There was a clear effort made by a lot of children to travel to school using with their bikes, scooters or walking!
