Food – Open Choice
Intent – Our aim is to ensure that food is not wasted on a regular basis. To complete this, we aim to encourage children to eat all of their food at lunch times and to explain what happens to the food that is wasted.
Implement – As we have not been able to use the kitchen in our hall, we have had to use disposable containers to have our hot dinners in. To reduce the amount of food we waste, we encouraged every person having hot dinners to eat all of their lunch so that we can reuse the containers for year 5 and 6 to use for their DT topic on ‘Moving Mechanisms’. One of our teachers also promotes reducing food waste as she picks up food from the local Tesco that is about to go out of date and offer the treats up to the staff members.
Impact – The children are aware of food waste and are encouraged not to throw away any food and to keep hold of the containers so that we can reuse them. We have also set up our Gardening Club this year and the Year 2’s have been planting vegetables, which will then be handed out to parents at the end of the year. The Year 5’s topic has been Sow, Grow and Farm, so they have been learning about growing their own fruit and vegetables, which they have done with their parents during our Open Classroom. They have taken them home and continued to grow their plants.
