Growing fruits and vegetables
Eco club members were harvesting cabbages and Brussel sprouts planted out in spring 2023. We were delighted by a bumper crop ready for our Christmas dinners.
In March 2024 even though it was a very cold and wet spring Eco club manged to grown two types (cordon and cherry) of tomatoes, four types of heritage beans and peas from seeds. Fast forward to June 2024 and together with vegetable plant donations we have an abundance of vegetables and fruit growing in our raised beds and wheelbarrows.
We are taking part in Grow your own food initiative run by Leicester City Councill. In two upcycled wheelbarrows we are growing vegetables and fruits. We have created a three course menu from the crop.
The wheelbarrows will be displayed in Abbey Pumping Station on 6th of July along with inner city school wheelbarrows.
The outcomes of students growing their own food have numerous benefits for their health, education, and overall well-being. Through gardening, students develop a greater appreciation for healthy foods, learn about sustainable practices, and gain valuable life skills.
