Energy 2025-2026
Intent We plan to sign up for ‘Let’s Go Zero!’ and complete the carbon calculator for our school. We will also take part in the Big Switch Off Fortnight in November 2025 and try to continue this message through the year to encourage children and staff to remember to turn lights and other electronics off whilst not in the room, reducing our energy consumption.
Implementation We began this mission by gathering information that we needed to complete the carbon calculator. This took quite some time as we had to survey our class and talk to all of the staff about their transport and speak to the people in charge of energy bills, purchasing items and the kitchen. Once we had gathered all of the information, we input it into our carbon calculator to see how our school was doing and what areas we need to work on.
We also took part in the Big Switch Off Fortnight in November 2025. We took turns to inspect the classrooms at break and lunchtime, after the classes had gone out to play. We noticed that all the classes were making a real effort and it was a close score at the end of the fortnights. Two classes tied as winners of “The most Eco class 2025/26”.
Impact All of the children and staff in our classes are now really aware of the need to switch off lights and whiteboards when they are not in the room and are continuing to remember to do this. The children are really good at reminding the adults about this too. Our energy consumption and bills should hopefully reduce as a result of this.
From our carbon calculator we discovered that a large part of our carbon footprint comes from how the children travel to school. As a team, we discussed the fact that this isn’t something we can change directly but thought of some ways we could encourage more people to walk to school if they can. We will take part in the “park and stride” initiative and think about how we can encourage the parents and wider school community to consider their travel.
