Travel: Termly Travel Week
Intent:
This year, the Eco Team have decided that we want to encourage people to use alternative methods of travel to school, rather than using cars and buses that contribute to air pollution. In order to do this, we are going to be running an Active Travel Week once per term. In October, in collaboration with the PE department, we are taking part in October Active Travel Month. We aim to encourage pupils, their families, staff and people in the local parishes to use active methods to make the journey to school, including walking, jogging, scooting and cycling.
Implementation:
To promote this initiative, we have informed our parents/carers/families about our aim to be more active and reduce air pollution. We have also written a notice to the local parishes, and have enquired if it would be possible to include this in the next parish newsletter. In order to monitor active travel to school, a daily checklist is being completed in each class to monitor the amount of children using an active method to get to school. We understand that some people live a distance away and therefore rely on travelling by petrol/electric vehicles. To enable them to still take part and encourage them to support our mission, we have suggested parking further from school/getting off at an earlier bus stop, and walking a further distance to school than usual. If pupils have been active for half or more of their journey, they receive a tick on the checklist. At the end of each week/month, we are going to see which is the most active class, and they will receive a prize of a safety reflective tag so that they are more visible when walking/cycling/scooting in darker conditions.
