Travel: Travel Campaign
Intent: We aim to monitor how many children walk to school and try to reduce this. We will also look at how many parents and carers leave their engines running whilst waiting to collect children afterschool and looking at how we can reduce this. We also aim to complete a walk to school week within the year.
Implementation: This ran in conjunction with walk to school week, we encouraged people to park / drop children off at the near by car park and then walk to school with staff. This means engines are turned off and there is less congestion along our road. Now we are in the summer term, we will add a notice to our school newsletter to ask parents to embrace the warmer weather and walk to school or to turn engines off. This is especially important as we hit warmer weather and people continue to use aircon in their cars while waiting.
Impact: Despite the weather during walk to school week, we had a good turn out every day and many of these families have continued to walk to school. We have also noted an increase in scooters, bikes and pupils walking in the summer term and therefore less cars on the road to our school. A ‘school travel’ survey at the end of the year will show us how many people now walk to school.
Future Actions: We will post on class dojo / newsletter reminding parents to turn off engines as they wait for their children. And keep encouraging the use of nearby car parks to walk to school from.
